Lipstick Lies is a concept that I have had floating around since I was
about 12 years old. Away at summer camp one year, the words
LIPSTICK LIES in big capital letters were etched onto the railing of one
of the bunk beds in my cabin. The words stuck with me and have been
applied to many different work-in-progress screenplays and short
stories, all involving a woman, who wakes up to find her newly wed
husband missing. Sometimes it was a psychological thriller,
sometimes a horror, other times experimental or TV style drama and
even film noir. Now I'm 30 years old and the words Lipstick Lies has
finally found its permanent home on this very special film, a medium
length movie mystery, with science-fiction elements.
I consider Lipstick Lies to be the sister film of my previous work,
Caroline of Virginia. They are both fairy tales set in contemporary times.
They both rely heavily on the locations in which they are set and involve
the female lead waking up to a dramatic change. The cast includes
New York stage actress Samantha Rivers Cole, for whom it was
developed and stage actor Matthew Krob as her love interest.
We shot the film in the fall of 2011, primarily in Manhattan. Pick ups
were done in Philadelphia in the spring of 2012. We partnered with
independent filmmaker and photographer Bren Thomas of O'ahu to film
b-roll of Honolulu, which was injected into the honeymoon scenes.
Lipstick Lies is a step forward for me as a filmmaker and a storyteller. It
is contemporary, it is pop and it is experimental. At 30 minutes it is a
fast watch. It is an elevation above my other projects but remains in the
same independent spirit and aesthetic style as my previous works.
